ABOUT US
You come first at Wichita Federal Credit Union.
When you become a Wichita Federal Credit Union (WFCU) member, you're not just an account number. WFCU is a not-for-profit financial cooperative, meaning all our members are also owners. Our members-first philosophy has served us well over the years. Wichita Municipal Federal Credit Union (WMFCU) was chartered in May 1940 to serve Wichita’s municipal employees, including Police, Fire, and Public Works departments. WFCU operates a branch located inside City Hall and maintains deep ties with many departments. In 2006, WMFCU became Wichita Federal Credit Union (WFCU) and opened membership to anyone who lives, works, worships, or attends school in Sedgwick County, Kansas. In 2025, WFCU opened the field of membership to include Butler, Cowley, Harvey, Sedgwick, and Sumner Counties. WFCU recently merged with Freedom 1st Federal Credit Union, which is now known as Wichita Federal Credit Union, located on McConnell Air Force Base. Since 1940, WFCU has grown to serve more than 18,000 members and manage over $254 million in assets. #Not-for-Profit, For Members. What is a Credit Union?
Think of a credit union as a financial institution, just like a bank. However, there's a key difference: credit unions are not-for-profit, financial cooperatives owned and operated by their members. The credit union philosophy is “people helping people.”
Credit unions offer many of the same services as banks. But the cool part is, because credit unions are not-for-profit, they often provide these services at lower costs in the form of lower fees and better interest rates.
When it comes to community, credit unions are deeply rooted. They're not a faceless corporation headquartered in big cities – they're right there in your neighborhood, serving the people who live and work nearby.
Other benefits include Local Decision Making, Free Financial Education, Community Investments, and Personalized Service.
